The brand new Turbonetics Scion tC turbo system has been released after the final dyno testing and tuning. Producing 244 HP & 262 ft./lbs. of torque at the latest Turbo Magazine dyno test, this kit will impress with the hood open showing the beautiful black chrome piping and the hood closed, boosting 8 psi of pure Turbonetics power.
Below is the article from our friends at DSport Magazine (www.DragSport.com):
With the Scion xB and xA on the street, Scion decided to release a sportier, coupe version of the Gen-Y targeted vehicle to the U.S. market. The release of the Scion TC sent aftermarket tuners straight to their R&D departments. The TC incorporates youthful styling along with a respectable 2AZ-FE engine. The 2AZ-FE powerplant is a DOHC, four-cylinder that is assisted with Toyota's VVT-I technology. In stock trim, the TC's 2.4-Liter engine generates 160 flywheel horsepower and 163 Lb/Ft of torque at the flywheel.
Shortly after the release of the sports coupe, oodles of performance components launched into the market in the short time that the TC had been available. Anything could be found for the Scion TC. Anything from complete suspension kits to full body kits became readily available for the TC. To the interest of the DSport staff, the Scion TC can further be upgraded with a complete bolt-on turbo system offered by Turbonetics Inc. of Simi Valley, California. Turbonetics has been one of the most innovative manufacturers of turbochargers and turbocharger system components for years. Amazingly, Turbonetics' product is so versatile that it can be found in many different segments. Anything from off-road, watercraft, automotive all the way to tractors, Turbonetics products are highly used and relied on in the world of turbocharging. According to Brad Lewis, Turbonetics' Vice President and General Manager, Turbonetics produces anything "From turbochargers to complete bolt-on turbocharging systems and everything in-between".
The Scion TC Kit
As the third of the Scion lineup was made available, Turbonetics designed a turbo system to augment the appealing TC. Turbonetics' Turbo Systems are designed to be a comprehensive kit, ready for installation and use without any fabrication. "Whether you have a four-cylinder sport compact or a V-8 muscle car, Turbonetics Turbo Systems include everything you need from fuel and ignition to piping and fittings for complete bolt-on turbo performance." says Turbonetics.
The foundation for Turbonetics' turbo system begins with a High-Carbon Cast-Steel exhaust manifold. Mounted onto the cast manifold, a Turbonetics T3/T4E Ball Bearing turbocharger is positioned to retain all factory amenities such as air conditioning and power steering. Turbonetics utilizes their patented Ceramic Ball-Bearing technology for the Scion TC kit. The Scion's Hybrid turbocharger is constructed of a T3 turbine section, Stage II turbine wheel and a T4 compressor section. This combination of different parts from different families of turbochargers is used to create a powerful, fast spooling turbocharger that can reap the advantages of the high-airflow traits of the T4 compressor family. Turbonetics' T3/T4E turbocharger seems to be sized perfectly to complement the displacement of the Scion's 2.4-Liter engine.
A Turbonetics' Evolution external wastegate mounts to the cast manifold to regulate boost pressure. To keep the Scion's engine bay clean and noise to a minimum, Turbonetics plumbs the wastegate's outlet back into the mandrel-bent stainless-steel downpipe. From the downpipe, a GReddy Performance cat-back exhaust system is used. To provide the chill, high-quality mandrel-bent aluminum tubing ties a Spearco front-mount intercooler into the equation. Turbonetics opted to use a Spearco intercooler with W.A.V.E. Technology (Wide. Area. Vane. Effectiveness). Spearco's W.A.V.E. Technology incorporates a network of vanes to decrease charge-air temps.
To conclude the kit, the Scion TC kit includes a set of RC Engineering fuel injectors. RC's fuel injectors pump more juice into the combustion chambers to aid in power production. The upgraded fuel injectors are optimized with a Unichip unit that is included in the Turbonetics kit. Straight from Turbonetics, you can receive the proper and safe tune for your newly turbocharged Scion TC. For those who look to further modify their TC's past the Turbonetics turbo system, the Unichip engine management unit can support your decision. On the tuning side, the Unichip can be re-written thousands of times. The Unichip can also control a host of other features such as water spray, water injection, progressive nitrous and more. This process requires a qualified tuning facility to access the Unichip and cater to further modifications.
DSport Evaluation
Once we had the Scion's keys in our hands we headed over to XS Engineering to utilize their dyno facility. As tested previously, a TC in stock trim turned the rollers with 140 horsepower at the wheels and 149 Lb/Ft of torque. Compared to the Turbonetics' Scion, power was increased by nearly 100 horsepower at the wheels. Power output jumped to 234 wheel horsepower and 251 Lb/Ft of torque. These numbers were accomplished on Southern California's 91-Octane pump gas. Other parts of the country might experience higher numbers when tuned to higher octane pump gas.
Once we saw what we were working with (234 wheel horsepower to be exact), we began the evaluation of the TC. We were pleasantly surprised to witness firsthand how the Scion put its power down. All points of the powerband were tuned on point. The torque produced by the Scion's big displacement engine combined with the low-end power provided by the turbo could definitely be felt. Moving a little higher into the RPM range, the Scion really takes off. The Turbonetics' turbo system produces 8 PSI of boost pressure steadily to the 2AZ-FE's 6500-RPM limit. The Scion's engine compliments the turbo's additional flow throughout the RPM range.
